Confused about using Full, entire, complete, whole ?

Những chữ như Full, entire, complete, whole đều là những từ đồng nghĩa, Tuy nhiên, trong sự thật không phải từ đồng nghĩa nào cũng thay thế cho nhau được. Ví dụ như các câu :

I might ask you to tell me the whole truth but not the entire truth.

Somebody might eat the whole thing, but he wouldn't eat the entire thing.

whole -------- Tell me the whole story.

complete ----- It was a complete fabrication (giả tạo).

entire ------- He memorized the entire poem.

full ---------- We paid in full for our mistake

Khi các bạn nghi ngờ cách sử dụng , nên dùng chữ WHOLE (đây chỉ là kinh nghiệm ; vấn đề là ý nghĩa của từng câu nói và trực giác của mình.)

Ví dụ whole:

- He carefully planned the whole thing. (giống như entire)
- The baby cried the whole trip home. (có thể sử dụng entire)
- After the treatment he felt whole. (Hết bệnh thì hoàn toàn khỏe lại)
- He spent the whole day walking (như entire)
- This is a whole new idea. (có thể dùng completely ...)

Thành ngữ:
as a whole
All parts or aspects considered; altogether: disliked the acting but enjoyed the play as a whole.
on the whole
1. Considering everything: on the whole, a happy marriage.
2. In most instances or cases; as a rule: can expect sunny weather, on the whole.

Ví dụ full:

1. He ran at full speed.
2. This book is full of errors
3. I was full after the Thanksgiving dinner.
4. The bases were full when the slugger stepped up to bat.
5. He was already pretty full of himself (như Complete)
6. Knowing full well. (có thể dùng complete)
7. Repaid in full amount = whole amount, entire amount, complete amount.
8. a full account = whole account = entire account

Ví dụ complete:

1. He is a complete scholar.
2. She completed the requirements for her Master's Degree.
3. His book is the most complete treatment of the subject.
4. Nothing worth doing is completed in our lifetime.

Ví dụ entire:

• Giống như whole và complete:
  - I spent the entire day on the beach.
  - The entire project is going well.
  - A house entirely hidden by trees.
  - I am entirely self-confident
  - They are entirely satisfied with the meal.
